Some facts about kitesurfing:

What is kitesurfing?

Kitesurfing is a fantastic, extremely varied and action-packed sport that is captivating more and more people! Kitesurfing combines the fascination of windsurfing with the dynamics of skateboarding and snowboarding. The special thing about kitesurfing is that you can practice this sport almost anywhere in the world, so kitesurfing is also perfect for an active vacation. Similar to surfing or wakeboarding, kitesurfing allows you to perform adrenaline-fueled jumps, stunts and tricks, and just as easily glide chillily over the water and relax while enjoying nature.

In kitesurfing you are pulled by a stunt kite, the kite, by the force of the wind. You stand on the kiteboard, which is similar to a small surfboard or wakeboard, and put your feet in footstraps or boots and bindings. The kite is steered with a bar that you hold in your hand, while your body is connected to the kite by ropes. The harness, a waist or seat belt, is strapped on and the kite and bar are attached to it.

What kitesurfing disciplines are there?

The individual kitesurfing disciplines ensure that there is something for every type of kitesurfer. Freeride, Freestyle, Wakestyle and Racing are the four main kitesurfing disciplines.

What is freeride kitesurfing?

Simply riding or cruising without committing to any particular kitesurf discipline. In summary, freeriding is playing with the elements. You don't focus on mastering a specific technique or discipline, but rather you play with the conditions and circumstances that prevail at the kitespot.

What is freestyle kitesurfing?

It is the perfect discipline for those who are looking for a challenge and like to learn new tricks. If you think snowboarding, wakeboarding or surfing are already cool, wait until you try freestyle kitesurfing! This is all about spectacular maneuvers, high jumps and fast rotations. Freestyle tricks are performed hooked or unhooked (with or without the leash hooked) and are often very challenging. Sometimes they are combined with other tricks. In freestyle everything is allowed - the different influences make freestyle kiteboarding interesting. Freestyle is everything that is technical, extreme and stylish.

What is Wakestyle Kitesurfing?

Wakeboarding and kitesurfing sounds like a pretty wacky combination, right? That's what Wakestyle is! Wakestyle is a style of kitesurfing that evolved from wakeboarding and often involves the same tricks. Unlike wakeboarding, you are not pulled by a boat but by the kite, which allows you to build up even more line tension. Another advantage of wakestyle on the kite is that you can practice tricks with less power first. For Wakestyle you only need your kitesurfing equipment, the wind and a body of water - no expensive wakeboard boat or wakeboard facility. Wakestyle is an incredibly challenging and breathtaking riding style - jumps and tricks are performed without kite support. Riding unhooked allows you to perform incredible tricks with handle passes - passing the bar behind you during a trick.

What is Racing Kitesurfing?

Racing is a fast, competitive kitesurfing discipline where you have to cover a certain staked out distance as fast as possible. Special raceboards and racekites are now used for race kiting.

Is kitesurfing also possible on land?

Yes, this is also possible! There are different kitesurfing variations like landkiting and snowkiting, which can be done on land & in snow. Snowkiting is the perfect alternative for all inland kitesurfers in snow. With modern snowkites you can start from 5 knots and a 9m² kite. Thanks to snowkiting you don't have to travel 350 km to have a few hours of fun on the water. Snowkiting is easier to learn than kiting in the water, because you don't have to learn the technique of waterstarting.

Is kitesurfing hard to learn?

No, kitesurfing is not hard to learn! Generally speaking, anyone can learn to kitesurf and you will achieve your first successes relatively quickly. Of course, as with any other sport, practice makes perfect. However, it is important to know the basics and be familiar with the material and technique. Even small kites develop enormous power, so good kitesurfing equipment is very important. Therefore, we recommend all kitesurfing beginners to take a course. There you will not only learn the most important basics, but also how to react correctly in dangerous situations.

How dangerous is kitesurfing?

Kitesurfing is a very demanding extreme sport, but if you go into it with the necessary knowledge and have the necessary respect (not fear), you will learn a fantastic sport that will enrich your life. In the past, the sport was notorious for being dangerous, but nowadays the material is much safer. If you master the material well, it is as safe as windsurfing or skiing.

What kitesurfing equipment do I need?

Kitesurfing is an absolute action sport and a real adventure. But beware, not only a kite and a board are needed to successfully sail on the water. You also need the right bar to attach your kite to, as well as a harness to keep you safe. Even small kites develop an enormous power, so it is important to have a good grip through a kite harness. Of course, the appropriate accessories, such as the pump, the wetsuit and, if necessary, shoes and gloves should not be missing. Choosing the right kitesurfing equipment is crucial for the fun and safety of kitesurfing.
So that you do not get lost in the huge selection of kite equipment, we have summarized the most important parts for you here:

  • Kiteboard with fins, binding and handle
  • Kite
  • Bar with 4 or 5 lines
  • A well fitting harness to attach your kite to. The harnesses are hip or seat belts and are strapped on. Harnesses and the bar with the hook are nowadays usually offered separately, so that you can adjust the size and the type of attachment individually. Remember that you may have to order both
  • Safety Leash for the kite. A board leash is not normally used for kiting for safety reasons
  • Kite pump for inflation for  tube kites (L.E.I. kites)
  • Wetsuit, helmet, impact vest and other accessories like boots, gloves or neoprene caps

The biggest differences in equipment are in the board, the bar and the kite. Here the equipment is adapted to your body weight, the wind conditions and your level. Please have a look at our kitesurf beginner sets.

How do I find the right kiteboard?

There is no simple answer to this question, because it depends - as so often in kitesurfing - on many different factors.

Here are some hints for you:

  • First, you should decide on a kitesurfing discipline: Freeride, Freestyle, Wakestyle or Lightwind? Beginners are mostly in the area of freeride.
  • In which environment do you want to kite primarily: Flat water, chop, small wave, big wave?
  • What are the predominant wind speeds at your kite spot: 10 knots, 15 knots, 20 knots, 25 knots or more?
  • What riding characteristics do you want your kiteboard to have: Easy handling, comfort, pop, grip?
  • How heavy are you: 70kg, 75kg, 80kg, 85kg

Kiteboards for beginners are lighter, bigger and wider and suitable for lighter winds. They allow you to launch easily and go upwind easily.

What types of kiteboards are there?

As with kites, there are different models of kiteboards for different disciplines. Overall, you can distinguish three main categories of kiteboards.

Which kiteboard for which discipline?

The choice of the right board depends both on one's own skill and kite level and on the preferred discipline.

Freeride and light wind kiteboards

Freeride kiteboards are suitable for beginners and are popular with many kiteboarders because they have good all-round characteristics and comfortable riding properties. Many kiteboard manufacturers offer freeride boards that differ in features and sizes.

Wakestyle and Freestyle Kiteboards

Wakestyle kiteboards are usually shorter and have a fixed wakeboard binding. This binding guarantees that your feet are securely attached to the kiteboard. This gives you a different board feel than when you use normal footpads and straps, as is usually the case with kiteboarding. This allows you to keep more power in the kite and pedal easier.

Kiteboards from the Carved Manufacture

Our Core kiteboards benefit from the decades of know-how of Europe's leading custom board manufacturer Carved and are built in the most elaborate construction method for a series board. With a Core kiteboard you always have pure fun under your feet, no matter if you choose a freeride kiteboard, like the  COREFusion 5 , a wakestyle machine, like the CORE Bolt, a wave surfer, like the  CORERipper 4, if you feel like freeride or freestyle.

Fun even when there is no wind

Also for the days without wind we have material for you in our program. If even the light wind kites are not enough for you, you can switch to our high quality Stand Up Paddling boards from Red Paddle, Starboard and Jobe.

Kite - types and differences

Which kite is the right one for me?

It is not easy to find or buy the right kite at the beginning. The shape (shape) and size play an important role in making the right choice. Brettsport has kites for every skill level and for every style of kitesurfing in its program. With kites from  CORE OZONE, NorthFlysurfer , F-ONE and Reedin we cover the whole spectrum of possibilities that kitesurfing offers you. Whether water, land and snow, freestyle, race, freeride, wave. Choose Your Passion!

What types of kites are there?

First of all, a distinction is made between tubekites (inflatable kites) and mats (soft kites, foil kites). Tubekites are also roughly divided into C-kites and bow kites, whereby C-kites are in turn subdivided into open C-kites, delta kites and hybrid kites.

Tubekites (Inflatable Kites)

Tubekites are kites that need to be inflated to get their shape. Most kitesurfers ride inflatable kites on the water. Within the Tubekites one distinguishes further subcategories like C-Kites and Bow-Kites, Open-C-Kites, Delta-Kites and Hybrid-Kites.

Bow-Kites / Delta Kites / Hybrid Kites for Freeride

Bow kites and its variations like the Delta kites, Hybrid kites or Open-C kites are good kites for beginners, but are also preferred by most professionals. These kites are more stable in the air and easier to fly, plus you can launch out of the water more easily. The kite keeps you in the air for a very long time from the jump, giving you plenty of time for board-off tricks and rotations. The newer models have great depower and are good for hooked jumps.

C-Kite for Wakestyle and Freestyle

C-Kites are exclusively kites for advanced and professional riders. You can recognize them by their typical C-shape . They are high performance kites with a very fast turning behavior. Good for hooked jumps and loops, but they don't forgive mistakes. The ultimate C-Kite CORE Impact offers the unhooked faction freestyle and wakestyle options at the highest level.

Mats / Softkites / Foil Kites

Mat kites are the ones that don't need to be inflated, as they have open chambers for air to flow in. This means that they are virtually self-inflating and retain their shape. Softkites have many advantages: they are extremely stable in the air, have a strong lift and a long hangtime. Disadvantages are that they are harder to launch from the water than tube kites and tend to be slower. Mats are popular for practicing on land, snowkiting, and in light winds.

Within tube kites and soft kites, there are also divisions by styles:

Freeride Kites

Freeride kites are the all-rounders among kites and offer many advantages to beginners as well as hobby kitesurfers. Well suited for waves or just as well to do tricks . Most recreational kiters and beginners are best advised with an Allround kite like the OZONE Enduro or the  CORE nexus.

Freestyle Kites

Freestyle kites are usually C-kites and are suitable for wild jumps and tricks. With a freestyle kite you have a constant pull on the lines. Freestyle kites are not suitable for beginners.

Wakestyle Kites

This kite is only suitable for professionals! For wakestyle kites basically the same characteristics apply as for freestyle kites. Most freestyle kites are also advertised for wakestyle moves. What makes the wakestyle kite so challenging is the fact that you have to do the jumps without the help of the kite. This means that the kite should be as low as possible.

Light wind kites

If you have to kite inland a lot, you are well advised to have a light wind kite in your portfolio as well and for this we offer with the light wind versions of the CORE GTS and the CORE XR7as well as the OZONE Zephyr offer three models at the same time. Also an alternative for light wind, but also rocket propulsion for race and hydrofoil sessions are our foil kites from OZONE and  Flysurfer .

Wave Kites

Wave kites are made for spectacular maneuvers and are only suitable for experienced kiters. When the bar is completely pushed away, you only feel a minimal pull. The pronounced depower is one of the most distinctive features of a Wave Kite. With the CORE Section 4 and the OZONE Reo V6 we have two kites in our program that are 100% optimized for fun in the wave.

Race Kites

Race kites, just like wave kites, are not suitable for beginners. If you want to race through the water as an advanced kiter later on, you should look around in this kite segment. Most race kites can be found among the mats (soft kites, foil kites).

FAQ

How much wind do you need to kite?
You can kite from about 12 knots, but with a foil under the board you can kite in much less wind. A global answer is not possible here, because this question depends on many factors: Riding ability, size and construction of the kiteboard, rider weight and kite size, construction of the kite and whether the wind really blows constantly at 12 knots or, for example, actually fluctuates between 0 and 12 knots.
