How do I find the right Wingfoil board?
If you are faced with the decision to buy a wingfoil board, you will quickly realize that the topic is extremely complex and you need to clarify a variety of parameters for yourself:
- Construction, fixed or inflatable?
- Volume?
- Which board length should a wingfoil board have?
- Hybrid option, e.g. to be able to use a surf sail as well?
- Material & weight?
###
What kind of board do I need for wingfoiling?
You need a board with enough buoyancy to start from the board in the beginning. For that, you need a board that you can stand on even when the board is not gliding or flying. To avoid pushing the board under water, the volume in liters must exceed your body weight in kg by 10. For beginners who still have problems with balance on the board, the difference should be significantly higher.
Therefore, SUP boards with a volume of 90 - 130 liters are ideal. More than 130 liters are only necessary for extremely heavy riders or for the first few days, but you can also simply abslovieren in a Wingfoil school.
To have real fun and not only ride downwind, you need of course a real foil board, which can be combined with a foil. You can use a normal SUP to gain your first experience with the wing.
Boards with less than 90 liters are either suitable for very light people or for those who can launch out of the water. Particularly low volumes are also used in surf-foiling, where mainly the wave provides the propulsion and the way back is only done by pumping or driven by the Wing.
If you are buying as an advanced wingfoiler, we recommend that you definitely look at the higher-quality boards. If necessary, always ask us for a discount.
A recommendation for this target group is clearly the KOLD shapes NØRDLAND board from kite master Mario Rodwald, who personally presents the advantages of his wingfoil board here in the video:
What other accessories do I need for wingfoiling?
In addition to Foil and Wing you definitely need a Leash for wing and board. It is a matter of taste whether you use straight leashes or coiled leashes. They can be attached to the wrist or ankle or to a belt around the belly.
Especially recommended for beginners are impact protection vest and helmet .
As with all other water sports, you also need a temperature-adapted wetsuit and in the cold season also neoprene boots and if necessary also neoprenegloves.
Make sure your foil comes complete with protective sleeves and a carry bag. Some manufacturers offer complete sets, others require you to order the protective covers and the bag separately. We will be happy to advise you on this.
A bag for a fixed foil board is also a useful accessory for your equipment.
