Land and snow kites from Ozone and Flysurfer
Although Germany supposedly has 2,389 km of coastline, very few kiters have the water right on their doorstep.
But everywhere, even in big cities, there is somewhere a perfect meadow for kiting even without water. Kiting on land with Mountainboard/ATB or in winter with a Snowkite board can be as fascinating as kiting on the water with the right equipment.
Below you will find a lot more information about snowkiting!

Perfect kites for land- and snowkiting
A special land/snow kite brings you a number of advantages, compared to using a tube kite on land.
First of all, the mats are less sensitive if, for example, branches are lying around on contact with the ground, which can ruin a bulging Tubekite. Above all, the snowkites have the advantage that you can easily launch and land them on your own. On a backcountry trip this is an invaluable advantage, because there is usually no defined take-off and landing zone with friendly helpers, but out there you are on your own.
Snowkites are also much lighter than a tube kite and have a smaller pack size, making it easier for you to cover distances you may have to walk to get to the spot. For expeditions, Ozone has even created ultra-light versions that have optimized the weight even further. To launch, you don't have to pump the kite up extra, you just lay the kite out, unroll the lines and you're ready to go. A landkite can be packed away just as quickly and easily.
There are pure land/snow kites, such as the OzoneSubzero, the OzoneExplore, the Flysurfer Peak or the Ozone Pure and with the Ozone Chrono and the Ozone Hyperlink, as well as the Flysurfer kites Viron, Soul and Sonic even kites that you can use on land, in the snow and on the water. Land and snow kites give you an extremely long hangtime, so you can also take your time on land to work on all the tricks you want to show later on the water.
Land and snow kites are also the perfect solution if you don't want to waste your water sports vacation at the dream kite spot in the kite school as a beginner. With a small Ozone Pure or the Flysurfer counterpart Viron and a mountainboard, you can practice kite control and kiteboard steering perfectly on the grass at home and then complete your kite course in a few hours. You will have fun on the water from the first minute on and you can use your landkite afterwards for all the days when you can't get to the water and of course as soon as the first snow falls.
Snowkiting
While kiting with a mountainboard requires some courage, kiting in the snow is probably the easiest way to get into kiting. You can fully concentrate on kite control and you are free to decide whether you want to use skis or a snowboard for snowkiting.
Kites for snowkiting
Even though you can use LEI kites (tube kites), which are common in water sports, on snow, dedicated snowkites offer many advantages:
- You can launch a snowkite on your own and also land it safely on your own.
- A pure snowkite delivers more performance in a smaller area. A 9m² Ozone Subzero easily keeps up with a 13m² Ozone Edge in the snow.
- A snowkite is much lighter and you don't need to carry a pump.
Harnesses for snowkiting
There are also differences in equipment. Snowkit harnesses can be worn over the jacket and do not have to be as brutally tight as the harnesses for the water. Leg straps prevent the harness from sliding up. Snowkit harnesses are much lighter than water harnesses. Snowkit harnesses can be ideally used also as a harness for landkiting on the meadow.
Snowboards for snowkiting
Many snowkiters simply use their normal snowboards or skis from the alpine area. The disadvantage of these boards is the radius: While you usually go down the mountain in arcs in alpine winter sports, you actually want to go quite straight courses in snowkiting and bring as much pressure as possible on the edge to be able to build up speed and run height. Especially on icy ground, the length of the usable edge is crucial for whether you control the kite or whether the kite pulls you across the ice surface.
Therefore we exclusively offer a special Snowkite board which we had constructed exactly for the use with the kite.
Safety
A normal ski/snowboard helmet and a back protector will ensure that you don't get seriously injured while snowkiting.
Where can you snowkite?
There are many spots for snowkiting in Germany as well, so snowkiting is a 100% safe alternative to alpine boarding even for impending travel restrictions and lockdowns. The most famous snowkite spot is the Wassekuppe near Fulda, but also the Harz mountains offer a lot of great snowkite spots. Who would like to have more information can contact us directly.
In a good winter you can snowkite everywhere where there is enough snow.

Landkiting
For landkiting the same applies as for kiting in the snow. Instead of a snowboard you use a moutainboard. Since the damping of the snow is missing, the safety equipment should be a little more robust.
