A product from the future

After eight years of tinkering, Kyle Doerksen introduced the first Onewheel in 2014. Who can't remember the scenes from "Back to the Future" where Marty McFly floated through the streets on a hoverboard. Where wires were used on a conventional skateboard back then and these were retouched away along with the wheels for the movie, riding a Onewheel today is very close to floating. 

How to ride your Pint X

Well balanced, you step onto the board with your back foot first, pull your front foot after it, and thus activate the two sensors in the footpad with your foot, which start the board. Once the Pint X is in a horizontal position, the motor activates and ensures that the board always remains horizontal. Riding the board is quite simple in theory. If you put your weight on  the left foot, the board accelerates to the left, if you put your weight on the other foot, the Pint X brakes first and then accelerates in the other direction. The more you shift your weight, the stronger the acceleration or braking effect. Turns are done similarly to skateboarding by applying pressure to your heels or toes.

If you have activated the Simple Stop function and very slowly change the direction of travel to reverse, the motor will stop. This lowers the rear part of the board and you can get off comfortably.

The Pint X is one of the newest models from Future Motion. It has a simple-stop option, which makes it easier to learn how to get on and off. If you only want to cover short distances, you've found the right model. The  Pint X has a range of up to 19 - 29 kilometers at a top speed of 29 km/h. It thus matches the performance data of Future Motion. It reaches the performance data of the Onewheel+ XR.

Whether speed rush or relaxed cruising - with your smartphone app you can set your Digital Shape and enjoy riding the Onewheel. The fast-paced unicycle offers a few differences in the process.

Short and sweet: the first steps on the Pint X

Electromobility is also gaining momentum in Europe. In addition to electric scooters, onewheels can also be found on the streetscape. What looks casual and easygoing requires a bit of practice, especially in the beginning. We show you the first steps. 

The first start

Before you venture out on the road, your Onewheel should of course be safely assembled and the app loaded onto your smartphone. Also, put on your safety gear - consisting of protectors and helmet. Sneakers are ideal for riding. As with skating or snowboarding, you'll also need to choose a foot that's at the front of the board. To figure this out, have a friend nudge you from behind. The foot you use to push off is your lead leg. 

• Regular: right foot
• Goofy: left foot

Now press the power button. Your buddy can help you climb up by facing you and holding on to your shoulders. Now place your strong foot on the back of the Pint X, which is still resting on the ground. Now step onto the front part with your other foot and try to balance yourself. In doing so, the motor already turns on. By shifting slightly forward, you gain speed. If you lean backwards, you will slow down leisurely. If you shift your weight more on the rear foot, you can also drive backwards, depending on the setting (SimpleStop). If you are confident in both directions, you can put more weight on your heels or toes to carve. 

Keeping your balance

At first it sounds difficult to keep your balance on a unicycle. But don't be shy, the electronics will make sure you don't tip over. This is similar to Segway technology. So you don't have to secure your balance on the wheel yourself like on a balance board. However, the Onewheel will still seem slightly tippy to you during the first attempts when standing, because even if the electronics establishes the balance in the direction of travel, you must of course keep the balance across the board yourself and also steer the board with this weight shift from the heels to the toes. This is associated with the Onewheel Pint X with some training. 

Like everywhere else, balance on the Onewheel is just a matter of practice. After a few hours or days, your legs will stop shaking and you can easily spend the whole day on a Onewheel without actively worrying about how to keep your balance. Just like riding a bike, eventually it just goes by itself and becomes natural. 

Get off safely

To get off the Pint X, you can jump. Slowing down by shifting to the back leg will reduce the speed of the board. Use both legs at the same time for the jump to avoid accelerating the board unintentionally before the descent due to uneven weight shifting. It's easier with the Simple-Stop mode, which you can activate via the app: Instead of riding backwards, the board shuts down when you load in the opposite direction, releasing you from balanced riding mode,

If you're a little more proficient on the Onewheel, you can lift your heel on the front of the board to deactivate it. Once you have that down, you can disable Simple Stop and then ride the Pint X forward and backward at will.

The Simple Stop reacts when you accelerate slowly in the opposite direction. If you shift your weight strongly in the opposite direction, you can also override the Simple Stop and drive backwards despite the Simple Stop function.

What is a Onewheel?

The Onewheel is a single-wheeled skateboard powered by a motor integrated into the wheel, which allows you to move on roads and light terrain. The large wheel is located in the center, your legs are to the right and left of the wheel. The Onewheel belongs to the class of sef-balancing vehicles, similar to the better-known Segways.

How fast is the Pint X?

The Onewheel Pint X is capable of 29 km/h. That's fast enough to get you to your destination in a reasonable amount of time. 29 km/h is far faster than most riders dare to go.

What is the range of a Pint X?

Depending on the model, you can access different ranges. The Onewheel Pint X can do between 19 and 29 kilometers on one charge, depending on how you ride it. With a second power supply you can charge the Pint X e.g. at work. So the range to reach the workplace is about 25 km. That would be enough even in big cities like Berlin, where you can also combine the Onewheel excellently with public transport and then cover the first and last meters with the Onewheel. With this combination you are in the vast majority of cases much faster than with the car,

How easy is it to learn to ride Onewheel?

As with any sport, it takes a few hours or days until you get the hang of it. Onewheel's electronics allow you to keep your balance. Starting and braking are already intuitive after a short time. 

Is it easier for boardsport riders to ride the Pint X?

The riding technique on the Pint X is somewhat different from sports like surfing, snowboarding, kitesurfing or longboarding. But of course you need to be fit and have a good sense of balance. Both will help you to get familiar with the Onewheel very quickly. When you get the hang of it, the experience on the Onewheel will remind you of snowboarding in powder.

What protective equipment do I need?

To prevent injuries, a helmet and protectors on knees and elbows are advisable. In addition, sliders on the palms and wrist guards protect you from injuries in case of falls.
